Equipped with an old bakery van and a business plan aimed squarely at the seven-year-old inside every New Haven resident, Todd and Marsha Rowe have trained fans to line up on city sidewalks waiting for their cupcake truck to appear. (A blog,, keeps patrons informed.) Opening a business in a recession is always risky, but the Rowes say that at two dollars, a cupcake is an affordable indulgence. "To see a businessperson come from a meeting or a student from working on a thesis and get this big grin on their face -- that's what we love," says Marsha Rowe.
